UNHCR Urges Myanmar to Grant Rohingya Muslims Citizenship
The head of the UN refugee agency urged Myanmar to grant citizenship to the Rohingya Muslims minority in the Asian country where Buddhist extremists continue to perpetrate violence against Muslims.
On his first official visit to Southeast Asia, UNHCR chief this week met communities in the towns of Sittwe and Maungdaw in Myanmar’s Rakhine state, home to a large population of Rohingya Muslims. He also met Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar’s de facto leader.Rakhine State in west Myanmar has seen the most serious violence perpetrated against Muslims in predominantly Buddhist Myanmar since the military began to end its decades of strict rule. Reports indicate that thousands of Rohingya Muslims killed and hundreds of thousands displaced there in communal unrest in 2012 in what appears to be a deliberate state-backed policy of ethnic cleansing.Myanmar’s government regards the approximately one million Rohingya as illegal migrants from neighboring Bangladesh and denies them citizenship, even though Rohingya families have lived there for centuries. The UNCHC chief has also called on the Myanmar regime to invest more in the Muslim region which continues to be marginalized. “It is one of the poorest states in the Union of Myanmar and there’s an urgent need for development investments that must be inclusive of the two communities,” he said. The United Nations has established a fact-finding mission to investigate crimes against humanity committed by Myanmar’s military during a brutal crackdown against Muslims which started last October.According to the UN, the Rohingya Muslims are one of the most persecuted minorities in the world.
